Agtech Funding Sheet: Insect Farming, Big Data, Soil Health Tech, Crowdfund a Cow Platform, more

nextProtein, a French-Tunisian black soldier farming and animal feed startup, has raised €1.3 million in seed funding from a range of investors including Kima Ventures, Silicon Valley business angel Jerome Lecat, Khaled Helioui, and crowdfunding equity platforms Anaxago and Angelsquare among others. In 2016, the startup was producing 30kg of insect larvae a day from 300kg of fruit and vegetable waste, and in 2017 aims to convert between five and 10 tons of organic waste into one tonne of protein and oil.

Sencrop, a connected weather station manufacturer, closed a $1.49 million seed round led by French clean tech VC Emertec and Paris-based digital startup backer Breega. Using low bandwidth wireless network technology, Sencrop’s sensors capture a wide range of localized data, which can be viewed in real-time on a smartphone.

Land Life Company, a startup hoping to regenerate degraded soil, closed a $2.58 million Series A with Dutch Postcode Lottery-backed Green Challenge Fund, sustainability-focused incubator SystemiQ, and Hong Kong-based venture studio Vectr Ventures. The startup will use part of the funding to develop further Cocoon, a low-cost, biodegradable product in which trees can grow autonomously without irrigation, and to invest in satellite monitoring of trees for R&D.

Crowd Cow, an e-commerce platform enabling consumers to “crowdfund” a cow and purchase the cuts they want with full traceability, has raised $2 million in seed funding. California-based venture firm Fuel Capital led the round with participation from California-based venture and private equity firm Maveron and three solo investors: zulily co-founders Darrell Cavens and Mark Vadon as well as retired 49ers football quarterback Joe Montana.

Catalina Sea Ranch, which is building the first offshore shellfish ranch in federally-regulated waters, raised a $2 million venture round with local South California investors. The company will use the investment to purchase buoys, floats, ropes, anchors, and mussel seed, and further develops its Ocean Internet-of-Things technology. Find out more on AgFunderNews.

RML AgTech, an India-based company offering mobile phone support solutions for farmers, closed a $4 million Series B with India’s IvyCap Ventures.

Hungryroot, a plant-based food startup, has closed a $7.7 million Series B round, according to Fortune. The funding, which brings Hungryroot’s total capital to $13.5 million, came from SF-based Lightspeed Venture Partners, New York’s Lerer Hippeau Ventures, SF-based Crosslink Capital, and others.

Incredible Foods, an allergen-free product provider, raised an undisclosed venture round with Illinois-based private equity firm Winona Capital Management.

MissFresh e-commerce, a Beijing-based online fresh food platform, raised a $100 million Series C led by Lenovo Capital and Incubator Group (LCIG) and Zhejiang Zheshang Venture Capital. Also participating in the round were Tencent Holdings, South Korean KTB Investments & Securities, Grand Fight Investment, and China Growth Capital.
