Agtech Funding Sheet: Habit Raises $32m from Campbells Soup for DNA Testing Nutrition Kit, Eaze Raises $13m Series B, more

Habit, a personalized nutrition startup set to launch in 2017, received a $32 million investment from Campbell’s Soup Company, making the food giant the company’s sole investor. Based in San Francisco, Habit will use data from an at-home test kit to give consumers personalized food recommendations tailored to their unique DNA. Eaze, a cannabis technology startup, closed a $13 million Series B to scale its medical cannabis delivery technology. Fresh VC led the round with participation from global tech investors DCM Ventures, political strategy firm for startups Tusk Ventures, NY-based early-stage investors Winklevoss Capital, Rose Capital, and others. According to the company, this makes Eaze the most funded cannabis startup in the market.

Pure Harvest Smart Farms, the Dutch greenhouse technology company producing fruits & vegetables in the challenging climates of the Arab Gulf, raised $1.1 million in seed funding from Abu Dhabi-based Shorooq Investments to help the company expand. Concurrent with the announcement of the new venture, Shorooq acquired a 3.3-hectare farm site in Nahel, UAE where Pure Harvest intends to establish the nation’s first high-tech, commercial-scale greenhouse, capable of year-round tomato production.

Box8, an Indian on-demand food delivery startup, closed a $7.47 Series B round led by seed-stage specialists IIFL Seed Ventures Fund with participation from Silicon Valley-based early-stage venture firm Mayfield Fund.

Vintage Italia, a Florida-based snack food company, closed a $3 million funding round led by Advantage Capital Agribusiness Partners (ACAP), with participation from Silas Capital and Emil Capital Partners. The funds will be used to spur new growth, launch new product lines, and tap into big retailers like Costco, Walmart, and Safeway. The company’s Pasta Chips are a baked alternative to potato chips using high-protein grains like farro.

WaterView, an Italian rain measurement platform, raised $516,640 in funding from angel network Club Degli Investitori. The new capital will be used to expand the company’s marketing efforts and operations. Launched in 2015, the Turin-based outfit created a big data platform that uses images from different digital imaging devices—including smartphones and webcams—to generate real-time rainfall information reflecting both spatial and temporal patterns. In addition to farming, the company supports the civil protection, outdoor sports, and transport safety industries.

MyFoodBag, a New Zealand business that delivers nutritionally-balanced recipes and produce to subscribers’ doorsteps, completed an undisclosed venture round led by NZ-based growth investor Waterman Capital. The startup’s founder is dietitian and cookbook author Nadia Lim.

MealPro, a startup that delivers custom portioned meals based on a metabolism assessment, raised a $100k seed round with undisclosed investors. The company believes that users can achieve their fitness goals simply by changing their diets.

Veggie Grill, a restaurant providing only plant-based foods, closed a $22 million Series E led by Brentwood Associates, a private equity firm in Los Angeles. Powerplant Ventures, a newly-launched fund dedicated to backing plant-based foods and related technologies, also participated in the round.
