Mighty Wild aims to bring acorn edibles to the masses

November 12, 2014

Who would have thought that anyone except for squirrels ate acorns, but Mighty Wild a food startup that’s making a new acorn-based cracker, found that there was a ton of pent-up demand after they launched a Kickstarter campaign two weeks ago, and blew through their original goal in less than 24 hours.

Mighty Wild was founded by two sisters Aline Copp and Mimi Brown. As the founder story goes, when Aline was in the 5th grade, she had acorn pancakes made by her teacher, Charis Smith, after reading the children’s survivalist novel My Side of the Mountain. Years later, while hiking among oak trees, she was reminded of her childhood experience and the age-old practice of cooking with acorns by ancient civilizations. Together as avid nature lovers and adventurist foodies, Aline and Mimi became inspired to introduce acorns to the modern American palate and formed the mission-driven food company Mighty Wild. Mighty Wild will donate a portion of its sales to plant trees and is working with the Arbor Day Foundation to make this happen.

Mighty Wild makes handmade, artisan products from acorn flour. The company spent a year sourcing the best acorns from the best foragers (An army of squirrels perhaps?), right here in the US. Retail distribution of their first product line, acorn crackers, is planned for mid-2015. The company will be launching 3 flavors original, rosemary & caramelized onion, spicy chipotle. Mighty Wild’s acorn crackers are gluten-free, vegan, and made with organic ingredients. The crackers also contain whole grains such as amaranth, quinoa, sorghum and millet. According to Mighty Wild, acorns are naturally gluten-free, contain high levels of polyphenols and antioxidants, are lower in fat than most nuts, and are a good source of vitamin B6.

The company launched their campaign on Kickstarter on November 5 with a goal or raising $25,000. At the time of posting, they have 261 backers with 37,299 pledged with 22 days remaining in their campaign. To learn more, you can visit their campaign here:
