The Cargill Protein Group has an opportunity available for a U.S. based Director of Sustainability. Cargill Protein is committed to creating sustainable supply chains for the good of customers, consumers, and communities. This role will lead a team of approximately four sustainability professionals and steer sustainability resources across Cargill Protein. The position will lead Sustainability as a strategic differentiator for customers and consumers, working with Business Operations and Supply Chain as well as Sales, Business Management, Marketing, Consumer Insight, and other growth-oriented business functions in the organization. The main business channels for Cargill Protein are Retail, Foodservice, and Protein Ingredients (Industrial). Sustainability is a strategic capability for the growth of each of these channels. The position will report to the Chief Marketing Officer for Cargill Protein, and participate on a Leadership Team with the Directors of Marketing, Innovation, Consumer Insight, Category Management, Culinary, and Communication. The Director of Sustainability will collaborate with customers, NGO’s, and industry, acting as an innovative sustainability expert, representing all of Cargill’s product capabilities, including Beef, Turkey, Eggs, and Packaged Meats. The role will leverage Cargill and industry best practice that deliver sustainable supply chain solutions. The ideal candidate will possess high integrity, passion, and character as personal traits. The position requires proactive leadership and outstanding written and interpersonal communication skills.
60% – Project Leadership and Execution
Manage the Cargill Protein sustainability team in executing established strategic plans.
Partner with sales and business leaders to ensure sustainability objectives are met and that benefits and value are captured for Cargill Protein and Cargill Protein’s customers.
Direct the tracking, measuring and dissemination of key sustainability metrics.
Ensure coordination/knowledge sharing with other Cargill businesses and the BOSC sustainability team.
Influence and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders including customers and NGOs.
Help drive solutions to create differentiating opportunities with customers and suppliers and mitigate business risks.
30% – Strategic Planning
Continue to evolve and execute on Cargill Protein’s long-term sustainability strategy and ensure alignment with Cargill’s corporate sustainability strategy.
Implement a comprehensive communications plan to inspire internal action and external engagement.
Establish meaningful internal and external goals and targets.
10% – Thought Leadership & Advocacy
Actively communicate Cargill Protein’s sustainability strategy and progress both internally and externally in close coordination with the BOSC sustainability team and Corporate Affairs.
Represent Cargill Protein at internal and external sustainability events and on multi-stakeholder industry initiatives.
Prepare Cargill Protein leaders for necessary external engagements on topics related to sustainability.
10+ years of professional work experience
5+ years of sustainability related experience
Understanding of trends and issues in sustainable agriculture or food supply chains
Ability to travel up to 30% (and higher if not based in Wichita)
Practical business acumen and capacity to assess sustainability issues, risks and opportunities in a business context
Strong analytical and strategic planning skills; skilled in moving from analysis to action
Demonstrated organizational skills to execute and deliver multiple, concurrent projects within deadlines
Excellent influence, command and stakeholder management skills—the ability to “sell” ideas
Demonstrated ability to build productive, long-term relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization; interact with and have credibility with senior leadership
Experience working directly for or in partnership with manufacturers, NGO’s, and industry associations focused on creating sustainable supply chains.
